Politicians in antiquity talked incessantly of morality and virtue; ours talk only of trade and money. One will tell you that a human being in this or that region is worth as much as the sum for which he could be sold in Algiers. Another one, thinking along the same lines, would name countries in which a human being is worth nothing, and yet others in which he is worth less than nothing. According to them a human being is valued at the level of his consumption in the respective country.
Les anciens Politiques parloient sans cesse de mœurs et de vertu; les nôtres ne parlent que commerce et d'argent. L'un vous dira qu'un homme vaut en telle contrée la somme qu'on le vendroit à Alger; un autre en suivant ce calcul trouvera des pays où un homme ne vaut rien, et d'autres où il vaut moins que rien. Ils évaluent les hommes comme des troupeaux de bétail. Selon eux, un homme ne vaut à l'Etat que la consommation qu'il y fait.
